Bass, Guitar and Vocals

John started playing guitar at the age of 10. It wasn't long after that when be became part of a rock band and was playing at jr. high school dances. Playing in various bands along the way, he joined Railway (Railway Express at the time) shortly after they formed, as a guitar player. What caused him to take up bass, was that early on, the bass player quit the band just before they were to play a wedding. It was too late to find a replacement so he decided to play bass for that gig. He's been the bass player ever since. Nowadays, not only will you see him mainly holding down the bottom line, but will occasionally strap on his 6 string to play a few during the night. Nowadays, not only will you see him mainly holding down the bottom line, but will occasionally strap on his 6 string to play a few during the night. "Railway keeps evolving with sometimes unexpected changes that come about. It just keeps getting a little bit better!"

Josh has been playing bands since he was 16, and is a founding member of 'Railway'. He has played all over the region, Vermont, Buffalo, and even as far away as Nashville. His mother also was a musician in the region, played many places, and had her own radio show.

Josh has worked with several organizations through the years, served as Noble Grand in the I.O.O.F., president of the Roamers Motorcycle Club, Tour Leader for the Americade Motorcycle Rally, first counselor in the church Sunday school and on the Board of Directors of the Northeast Country Music Association. He currently works as a supervisor and assistant to the Special Events Coordinator at U Albany.

lead guitar and vocals

Dutch has been playing guitar in a variety of groups around the Capital District since the late 1970s. Bands such as the RetroSonics, Last Licks, the Targets, and the Blissters gave him the opportunity to explore a variety of guitar-playing styles which include blues, rock, country, zydeco, and ballads, by playing both cover tunes and original songs. The Targets recorded extensively in the Albany area during the early 80s and released a single that received local FM radio rotation, and the song “Something About You” received national recognition. Most recently, Dutch played guitar for Idette and the Sunrunners, a local group that performs original folk-rock and blues.

Dutch spends his days working at the Wadsworth Center, a NYS Health Department laboratory complex, and spends some of his evenings teaching furniture-making techniques at the Arts Center of the Capital Region in Troy, NY. He lives in Poestenkill NY with his partner Dody, and their kids Sarah and Scott. When he’s not preoccupied with work or music, he can be found wandering aimlessly around his woodworking shop, trying to remember what he set out to do five minutes previously. He is also working on proving the theory that a boat is really just a hole in the water, lined with aluminum, that you throw money into.

He is currently taking a few months off from studying travis-style guitar picking and mandolin playing from local musician and author Glenn Weiser in order to finish his teaching schedule and acclimate himself to his new musical surroundings with Railway.

Drums and Vocals

DJ  began drumming at age 8 and went 'pro' at age 15 playing in pit orchestras for summer stock productions in Upstate New York. He has traveled and performed with a multitude of musical groups and styles including 'Doc Scanlon's Rhythm Boys' (jazz / swing / rock, rhythm & blues), 'The Fabulous Armadillos' (country / Texas swing), 'Swing Fever' (Manhattan Transfer, Asleep At the Wheel, Michael Franks, Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks, etc.), 'The Main Event' (top 40 show / dance band), 'The Carbon-Based Units' (jazz / fusion), 'The Dixie Daddies Dandies of Jazz' (dixieland), 'The Kosek Brothers New Yorkers Orchestra' (Polish), 'The Vagabonds' and 'Capital Brass' Sr. Drum & Bugle Corps, various big bands, concert bands, wind ensembles, percussion ensembles and symphony orchestras. He has composed, arranged and worked on the instructional staff of several jr. and sr. drum & bugle corps, marching bands, pipe bands and percussion ensembles. He was named to 'Who's Who In American Music' in 1978 when he was also awarded the prestigious John Phillip Sousa Award. His musical interest has continually expanded to include producing and post-production. His musical and computer skills often overlap as he has designed and setup several computer-based recording studios in the area.

From 1993 - 1999 DJ played with 'The Upstarts' - a contemporary top 40 dance trio. The group was MIDI enhanced and consisted of Matt Donnelly on keyboards and vocals, Mark Caruso on guitar and vocals and DJ on drums and vocals. The bass parts were 'sequenced' ahead of time then played back via laptop computer during the performance. The sequences also ran a 15 piece light show custom designed by the group which illuminated each player as they would sing or solo as well as adding appropriate, colorful backdrops for each song.

DJ also plays every Tuesday and Wednesday night from mid - June through Labor Day at Rydin' Hi Ranch Resort in Warrensburg, NY with 'Red River Randy & His Saddle Sores' - an all-star band whose members are all in other projects full time and this is their 'getaway'. The group consists of Don Young on bass and vocals (from Doc Scanlon's Rhythm Boys and others), George Schacher on guitar, fiddle, mandolin and vocals (from 'Aged In the Hills'), local pedal steel legend Randy Rolman on pedal steel and vocals (from 'City Limits' and proprietor of the Legend Guitar Shop in Luzerne, NY) and DJ on drums and vocals. He also fills in several local bands including 'Aged in the Hills', the 'On Stage Revue', and local rockers 'Lois & the Kryptonites' but is extremely pleased and excited to be the driving force behind 'Railway'

Away from music he enjoys golf, tennis, bicycling, volleyball (setter for U.S.V.B.A. traveling team), computer gaming, website design, desktop publishing and motorcycling. He returned to Upstate New York to 'settle down' in the early 90's where he now lives with his wife Julie and daughter Selena Rose. During the day he works full time for the Washington Saratoga Warren Hamilton Essex Counties Board of Cooperative Educational Services as a Micro Computer Specialist based out of Saratoga.

He plays Sonor drums, Aquarian drum heads, DW pedals, Zildjian cymbals and use Vic Firth sticks......all exclusively!
